Cycling is easy – once you know how…

April 17th, 2006

Last summer, Gabriël got to ride a two-wheeled bicycle for the first time, and he actually learned it within about 10 minutes. He only got to ride it for 2 days though, as the rest of our holiday was filled with rain, resulting in a really soggy camping field, not fit for riding a bike.

For some time now I had promised him a bike of his own, and last week we finally got one, so yesterday we went out to practice…

After just a little bit of holding him, he got the hang of it again, so here’s the pictures :-)

Finding the right position to start…

It works!

Ehm.... ;-)

Guess who got the blame for this one?

After that first round, he also learned how to brake, as well as to avoid making sharp bends in sandy spots :-)

A special moment captured on camera to make his Mother proud, and then a special moment of humiliation in painstakingly-assembled, frame-by-frame action-shot detail to bring out at a future wedding reception or for when he first brings a future girlfriend around for dinner. Nice!

It isn’t the right weather at the moment but the “don’t brake on black-ice going downhill at 40km/h” lesson is another one worth remembering. Well, I keep forgetting it :/ Ah, just remembered — no hills there!

Nice shots, what a moment to catch him ;-)

It’s been a fwe weeks now, so I think he already rides his bikes like he’s never done before.

@ Andrew – not many hills here, but we do live next to a river, so there are several slopes to get up and down the dykes (cycle paths mostly) which should be avoided with brake-less bikes. (experienced expert talking here, although not comparable to your adventure[1] ;-) )

@ Lieke – just a matter of filming till they fall ;-)
Yes, he’s doing much better now – even cycled next to me on the road a bit.
